HI,
I've enjoyed this list serv. I"ve especially appreciated all that's been
provided in response to the terrorists attacks. Your information has
allowed us as a staff to respond to events on campus very quickly.
On another note...
I am trying to guide oour senior staff through thinking about where
volunteer service fits and relation to service learning. And where
leadership fits in relation to service learning.
I am looking for the following information:
Is there a model where Service Learning and Volunteer Services is separate?
If so, why was it designed that way.
It appears most of you have service learning and volunteer services together
- aside from the obvious (that you are talking with the same community
resources) are there other reasons to have it that way?
I am also working with the curriculum committee / academic side to try to
guide them through some thoughts about reduced class time when service
learning is required.
Could you share with me the standards your universities have set (if they
have) for standards of class time versus volunteer time. For example -
University of Denver (I am told) has a standard for instructor of for every
2 hours of service there is one hour off of class. I'm wondering if others
have such a standard. We know we need to help the instructors realize how
to balance service and papers and class time - but needed some standards
from other universities.
