America Reads*America Counts job opening

America Reads*America Counts at University of Maryland is a nationally
recognized model program that was one of two such programs featured in a
video developed by the U.S. Department of Education. The University of
Maryland was one of twenty charter campuses in the country to establish
America Reads programs.

Coordinator, America Reads*America Counts
Contingent II Position -- Full-Time
The America Reads*America Counts Coordinator is responsible for the
overall development, management, and evaluation of the University of
Maryland’s America Reads*America Counts Program. The goal of America
Reads is to ensure that every child can read well and independently by
the end of the third grade. America Counts helps elementary students
master the fundamentals of mathematics and stay on track for college and
promising careers. University of Maryland students gain valuable skills
and experience as Reading and Math Mentors, while earning money to pay
college expenses. This position reports to the Director of Commuter
Affairs and Community Service/Advisor to the President for America
Reads*America Counts,
Specific responsibilities include:
· Overall direction of the America Reads*America Counts program, a group
of approximately 100 Federal Work-Study (FWS) mentors who work in 9
Prince George’s County schools.
· Supervision of the America Reads*America Counts working team which
includes Coordinator of Reading Mentor Training, Coordinator of Math
Mentor Training, and the FWS Coordinator (graduate assistant positions).
· Supervision of FWS student office team leaders.
· Development and maintenance of liaisons with Prince George’s County
school personnel, UM College of Education, and other campus agencies.
· Development and implementation of structured regular reflection for
mentors.
· Conceptualization and implementation of publicity and public
relations.
· Evaluation of the America Reads*America Counts program.
· Design and implementation of recognition efforts for program
participants.
· Writing of grant proposals and development of corporate and other
partnerships for ongoing support and expansion of the program.
· Participation in the delivery of other department services and
programs.
Qualifications: Master’s degree in college student personnel/higher
education, elementary/secondary education, psychology, or related field,
supervision of college students, program organization and management,
developing campus-community partnerships. Other desirable experiences
include elementary school teaching, reading or math tutoring, community
service, grant writing, program evaluation, and work in a college
setting. Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
Remuneration: This is a one-year full-time contract position. Salary
mid $30,000s. Excellent benefits package includes health insurance,
sick and annual leave, retirement subsidy, and tuition remission.
