In response to Carol Clyde's question about history of national service and
higher ed:

The best document that captures the recent/current era of national service
and higher ed was done by Goodwin Liu under the sponsorship of the Feinstein
Institute at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island. He's not
currently there but you could possibly get the document from Rick Battistoni.
I can't remember the exact name of the paper, but I'm sure Rick would know
what you're talking about.

Another great source would be Indiana University's Center on Philanthropy.
They've done a number of projects to document the history of national
service. They are based in Indianapolis.

For a more general history of national service, you might also check out a
publication called "Roots and Flowers"?? by Roger Landrum, co-founder of
Youth Service America. It should be available through YSA which is based in
DC.

I thought I'd post my response to the whole list because others might be
interested as well.
