Carol,
You might want to contact the University of Maryland's Academy of
Leadership (formerly the Center for Political Leadership and Participation)
and ask for a copy of their book "A History of National Service in America"
Edited by Peter Shapiro. This book not only mentions the more recent
efforts with civilian service, but it also discusses the huge impact of the
military service benefits to education. For more information contact them
at (301)405-5751.
