NATIONAL SERVICE LEARNING INSTITUTE FOR
ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS, AND SCIENCE FACULTY

A national service learning institute specifically for faculty in
engineering, mathematics, and science disciplines will be held March 6 - 8,
1998 on the campus of Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio.
This institute is funded by the Corporation for National Service (CNS) and
is co-sponsored by Campus Compact and Case Western Reserve University's
Office of Student Community Service.

PURPOSE
The purpose of the institute is to show faculty in these disciplines how to
integrate service learning into their courses. Faculty in these
disciplines are targeted because they have not traditionally attempted to
combine service with academic study. The goal is to recruit faculty
participants who are willing to rethink their curriculum to incorporate
service learning and to serve as spokespersons for service learning in
their discipline. Participants will be expected to bring their syllabi
and, with the assistance of experienced practitioners, to redesign them
during the institute to include a service component connected to course
work.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The institute is designed for faculty members in engineering, mathematics,
and science disciplines who are interested in enhancing academic learning
while meeting a need in the community. Eligible faculty are those who have
not yet integrated service learning into their undergraduate course work.
Faculty from both two-year and four-year institutions are invited to
participate. Eligible faculty must be either tenured, in a tenure-track
position, or have taught at least two non-remedial courses annually over
the past three years.

FORMAT
The keynote speaker is Dr. Eleanor Baum, Dean of the College of Engineering
at Cooper Union and past president of the American Society for Engineering
Education (ASEE). During the two and one-half day institute participants
will hear from practitioners on several key components of service learning
(needs assessment, solution, reflection, and evaluation). Participants
will be divided into working groups by discipline to develop creative
strategies for integrating service learning into their courses.

COST
Participation is open to all faculty in these disciplines. Registration
fee: $150. Single rooms $120/shared $60. Partial scholarships are
available for faculty at CNS/LSHE grantee institutions.
