Paul,
You might try getting in touch with "KaBOOM!"
"KaBOOM!" is a non-profit organization co-founded by a Dawn Hutchison
(formerly a staffer here at COOL ) and Darrel Hammond. They help folks
build community playgrounds. (They were the organizers of the playground
built in Philadelphia during the President's Summit in April).
KaBOOM works with top playground architects to help communities design and
build playgrounds from scratch by pooling resources of money, volunteer
labor, food donations, construction materials and tools. The process starts
with the drawings and dreams of children and throughout the following
months becomes an awesome reality. Because these playgrounds are built by
hundreds of volunteers and supplied by donated materials, this is very
affordable and creative means for building playgrounds. By offering
technical assistance in organizing and fundraising, KaBOOM! offers a means
of building broad-based community investment and long-term community
impact.
The services they offer are:
* Community-built playground consulting
* Project Best practices kits and handbooks
* community-building curriculum for young people and adults
* Community mapping strategies
* Public relations and sponsorship consulting
* Fudraising for community projects.
