Paul - I'm not certain if this is the type of information you're looking
for, but I ran a project this September for our entering students as a
part of our Orientation Program that included playground improvement as
one of our objectives. We are a public college of art located in
inner-city Boston and wanted to introduce our students to the concept of
service learning. 300 of our new students were divided into 16 groups.
Each group was led by 2 upperclass students, a faculty member, and a
staff member. There were 16art-related sites and projects. 3 sites were
inner-city public school "playgrounds" which were basicly just empty,
blank asphalt. Our students painted all types of games, world maps, etc.
on the asphalt. 4 sites were urban playgrounds run by the Boston Parks and
Recreation which has graffiti on the equipment and were plain, worn-out
wood. MassArt students repainted the wood with colorful designs. They
spent 5 hours at their sites, and came back to campus for reflection and
sharing of experiences. If this is something you're interested in, I'd be
glad to provide you with more info.
Another thing you might be interested in is the Boston Schoolyard
Initiative. This group got funding from several local corporations to
improve and rebuild public school playgrounds. I can give you more info on
them, too. Feel free to email me or call me.
