You might want to think about contacting an architectural program at your
nearest university, if you have one. This would make a wonderful
design-build service-learning project. I've recently worked with an
initiative through my work with Learn & Serve. In it a Design/Build
school taught a course in Norwich University's (Vermont) architectural
program which in turn worked with the kids and adults in a local
community to redesign a portion of the existing elementary school. It
was service-learning and school-to-work for everyone, the community was
transformed, and the school gym/library/allpurpose room was redesigned.
It was done on a $7500 Learn & Serve grant, a $5000 STW grant, and an
incredible outpouring of community support of services, in-kind goods, and
an allocation from the town budget which was doubled at town meeting.
The students requested $1000; the townsfolk granted $2000!
