Social justice, education and youth internships

Are you in Washington, Oregon, the Bay Area, Miami?  The Institute for Community Leadership is looking for interns to work for change in public schools and provide opportunities for young people to advocate for justice and transform themselves and their communities.

 

We have opportunities available in each of these places immediately but would love to hear from others elsewhere who are interested.

 

The Institute for Community Leadership (ICL) recruits individuals committed to personal and social change.  ICL invites individuals and to become interns and institutions to nominate potential interns.  Interns must be willing to transform themselves, get out of their comfort zone and organize others.

 

ICL, utilizing poetry, creativity, nonviolence and community advocacy, builds the capacity of youth to advocate for social justice and work for change. 

 

The arousal, education and organization of individuals for sustained social action requires dedicated warriors.  Our nation’s schools and citizens must orient themselves to this task and challenge students, teachers, administrators, parents and community members to carry the mantle of social justice and social uplift.

 

ICL commits to the integration of individuals into the movement for social justice, peace and civil and human rights in their local communities, nationwide and around the world. 

 

ICL interns:

 

·        Organize families, youth, educators and community members in support of social justice

·        Receive training in organizing from ICL as a cadre for justice

·        Study, read and write on issues of concern to their communities and to the movement

·        Reflect and practice reflection as a method of organizing others and becoming noble warriors for justice

 

Possible internships include:

 

Assistant Facilitator- Join certified ICL facilitators in local schools utilizing the ICL Leadership Poetry Workshop curriculum.  Engage young people in transformational leadership opportunities, organize community events, build ties to local community organization and relate to families and teachers.

 

Reflection Center Outreach Coordinator- research and outreach to environmentally safe and just organizations and business regarding- support for Reflection Center Work.  Donations of household products, foods, outdoor tools and resources for growing, Volunteer coordination etc.

 

History & Archiving of ICL related work- create a system for archiving ICL study session materials, articles, taped meetings and interviews, video recordings, still photo recordings, transcribing.

 

Grant Writer- research and write grants to assist in the growth and development of the ICL Fund Development Department.

 

Publications & Public Relations- Research and outreach to possible print media and publishing companies regarding ICL and related works.  Network for contacts and press in cities and regions that ICL is active.  Create an ICL press kit for long-term use.

 

Democracy Education Researcher- Areas of for further research- Record the impact of war on education development; Sociological impacts of prisons on schools; Methods & pedagogy of education internationally (Vietnam, Cuba, S. Africa, Japan, etc.). 

 

Shoulder the Vote Campaign- Organize youth as advocates for reclaiming democracy through voter education and empowerment.

 

Events & Activities- help in organizing event venues (in-kind), set up and take down during ICL LPW and other activities, hosting at ICL events, event volunteer coordination.

 

Office Maintenance and House Keeping- once or twice a week office clean up and maintenance (this is a bit un-thought out)

 

In House Office Assistant- general admin work around the office, this person should be able to drive, do pick up of students for tutoring, 

 

Youth Coordinator- Relate to families, visit homes, organize for events, edit poems, outreach and general follow-up with youth and families.
