ladies/gentlemen/colleagues:
our organization, bhs student civic association has been asked to conduct a workshop in february for the annual human rights awareness day conference at hofstra university in which high school students from across long island participate.
as our organization stressed empowering youth in reflective, pro-active decision-making, sometimes despite the influences that surround them, and given the recent incidents of stereotyping, hazing, bullying and similar conflicts, we have been given the task to present a workshop on these issues...and how to "listen to our own voices", make conscious choices against prejudice, bias (even when supported tacitly or otherwise by some figures of authority....), how to act and or react. sometimes, the problems also stem from parents, those in authority who make comments or impose thoughts that might not have necessarily been the view of the student. this situation happens more often than not in the case of illegal substance use/abuse, prejudice and bias, and other racial/ethnic cases.
as advisor, i believe this is a very important issue for as many students of high school age to grasp. i am therefore looking for suggestions in planning, organizing and implementing this workshop for february.
if you can direct me to other successful workshops or organizations that could help in outlining a workshop stressing these issues and concerns, i would be very grateful.
thank you for any suggestions you may have.
