California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB), is a comprehensive
public university committed to serving the diverse people of California,
especially the working class, historically under-served, and low income
populations. The university values an educational environment of cultural
and linguistic diversity and gender equity; ethical reflection and
practice; effective and experimental use of technologies as resources to
people and catalysts for learning; and the integration of
cross-disciplinary models enabling students, faculty and staff to engage
in innovative instruction and coordinated service learning. The curriculum
is organized around student learning outcomes. It is global in
perspective, and of sufficient breadth and depth to meet local, regional,
and statewide needs, specifically those of both isolated rural communities
and inner-city populations. The campus is located on Monterey Bay, 100
miles south of San Francisco.
Under the general supervision of the Director of Service Learning, the
Coordinator of Service Learning Leadership is responsible for teaching the
courses that comprise the Service Learning Institute's minor in Service
Learning Leadership and directing CSUMB's service learning student
leadership program. The Coordinator provides direction and vision for this
cutting edge student leadership program that values compassion, diversity,
justice and social responsibility. The program provides student leaders
with the knowledge, skills and abilities to assist in service learning
course instruction, to build and facilitate service learning community
partnerships, and to become capable multicultural community builders and
social justice advocates. The Service Learning Student Leadership Program
ensures that student voice and participation is integrated throughout
CSUMB's service learning program, enabling CSUMB to deliver quality,
social justice focused service learning campus-wide. Additional

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Directs the Summer of Service Leadership Academy (SoSLA) each summer, a
four-week training program for newly recruited Service Learning Student
Leaders.
2. Teaches the two core courses for the Service Learning Leadership Minor:
SL 300S: Service Learning Pedagogy and Design each Fall; and SL 394S:
Service and Social Justice each Spring semester.
3. Teaches one section of SL 200S: Introduction to Service in
Multicultural Communities each Fall and Spring semester, including
developing and maintaining relevant community partnerships.
4. Provides overall guidance and support for the student leadership
program, including facilitating recruitment, placement and evaluation of
student leaders, managing the program budget, planning and coordinating
recognition events, and overall program evaluation.
5. Participates in the faculty leadership for the Service Learning
Leadership Minor, reviewing service learning Capstone projects and
portfolios where necessary.
6. Participates in Service Learning Institute staff meetings. Works
collaboratively with other Service Learning Institute staff to support
other service learning training initiatives and events. Participates in
development of Service Learning Institute's academic program.
7. Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
An earned doctorate in Social Justice Education, Ethnic Studies, Gay and
Lesbian Studies, Women's Studies, College Student Development, Sociology,
Psychology, Community Development or a related field AND two years
experience in relevant college-level teaching and/or student leadership
and/or service learning programs. Candidates in advanced standing ABD will
also be considered. Experience facilitating training in diversity,
multiculturalism and social justice issues. Experience effectively working
with diverse communities and populations.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of student development theory, and service learning theory and
practice. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement curriculum and
training programs for student leaders involved in social justice and
service learning work. Knowledge of and experience in developing
leadership abilities in ethnically and culturally diverse college
students. Ability to facilitate self-reflective learning about the impact
of social group identities (e.g. abilities, age, class, gender, primary
language, race, sexual identity, religion) on community participation,
leadership and social justice. Demonstrated ability to teach college-level
courses about issues of service learning, community participation, and the
dynamics of institutional power and privilege. Ability to work effectively
in communities that are diverse in race, ethnicity, class, sexual
orientation, language, and religion. Ability to communicate in Spanish is
desirable.
SALARY: Commensurate with background and experience; position also
includes an attractive employee benefits package.

2004.
