Dear Colleagues, I am the Director
of a volunteer center for the country of
Lebanon (the Association for Volunteer Services). Since there is no other agency that
teaches Service-Learning in Lebanon, I have conducted a number of workshops to
introduce SL to schools and universities here. We recently established a Schools and
Universities Committee “to promote, facilitate and improve
volunteering and community service throughout Lebanon specifically through
educational institutions (elementary, secondary, technical, and university
levels). Its scope includes
academic/curricular and non-academic/extra-curricular programs of educational
institutions.” The Committee has decided that the first thing it
wants to do is to conduct a survey of Lebanese schools to see what already
exists in 1)
Get information on
what is actually being done in schools – for what objectives? And how effective? Strengths and weaknesses? Costs? 2)
Find out the needs
and aspirations the schools have in regard to service 3)
Establish a baseline
from which to evaluate progress toward our objectives 4)
Obtain examples of
school service programs that can serve as models for other schools 5)
Provide schools with
awareness of the many different possibilities to incorporate service in schools 6)
Help in
establishment of core group of schools to work with this year. 7)
Provide a working
example of collaboration between universities, schools, and AVS in doing the
survey (university students would conduct the survey) It occurred to me that some of you may have conducted
such a survey yourselves, so I would appreciate it if you could send me a
copy. And if anyone would like to
review our draft questionnaire, I would really appreciate it. Perhaps we could even conduct parallel
surveys in a number of different countries and compare the results? Let me know if you are interested.
