Overcoming institutional barriers to service learning
16 October 2001 15:00 UTC
A message from Tanetta Andersson, one of our graduate students:
I am a Ph.D. student at Case Western Reserve University involved with a
faculty learning circle focused on increasing opportunities for societal
engagement by our undergraduate students. Specifically, the faculty are
interested in discussing ways of overcoming the institutional barriers
which limit the
potential for incorporating service learning into their classes.
They have asked me to inquire about service-learning "friendly"
institutional policies at other universities, for instance, how universities
- consider service-learning courses in the promotion and tenure process
- deal with issues of possible liability with students participating in
service-learning projects off campus
- establish criteria for service-learning research projects to
pass institutional review boards.
Any contributions/input/advice addressing these concerns would be greatly
appreciated. Please address your reply to me at tea@po.cwru.edu. I will
be glad to post a summary of the responses I receive to the listserv.
Many thanks!
