A colleague has asked me to post this to the SL listserv. Last year,
there were quite a few programs presented about service-learning in the
great outdoors! For questions, please contact David Hutchison at
hutchisonde@appstate.edu or Lee Burdette Williams at lee@sister.com.

Appalachian State University proudly announces the return of Student
Affairs and the Great Outdoors -- a professional development institute
for

-people interested in outdoor and adventure education
-outdoor educators in collegiate settings interested in exploring
student development as a context for their
  work
-anyone interested in bridging these two areas to create powerful
learning environments

in Boone, NC, high in the Blue Ridge Mountains, May 30 June 2, 2001

Our speakers will be Doc Klein, director of the Expeditionary Learning
Institute and a nationally recognized expert on experiential and
adventure-based learning, and Windy Gordon, Vice President for
Institutional Advancement, Brevard College, and founder of "Voice of
the Rivers," a remarkable student expedition program.

There will be opportunities for whitewater rafting, climbing, caving,
hiking, primitive skills education, group interaction course training,
and service-learning.

We're accepting programs proposed by participants, and the deadline for
those is Feb 7. These can be submitted online at our website.

The cost is $295 before April 15, $315 after. This cost includes most
meals and housing.

If you'd like an excuse to spend five days doing some good learning and
fun stuff in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, please consider this
institute a good use of your time and money.
