Phillips Academy
COMMUNITY SERVICE TEACHING FELLOWSHIPS

BACKGROUND
Phillips Academy, founded in 1778, is an independent, coeducational,
diverse, non-sectarian, non-profit boarding and day school offering a
variety of academic programs for American and international students in
grades 9-12 and post-graduate. Student enrollment is approximately 1100
with a teaching faculty of more than 200 men and women. Andover has a
tradition of devotion to democratic ideals and seeks to develop in its
students sound personal values as well as scholarship and creativity.

THE TEACHING FELLOW PROGRAM
As Teaching Fellows at Andover, recent college graduates are
introduced to teaching and/or administration through immersion in an
academic community. In addition to their primary educational
responsibilities, Teaching Fellows participate in the residential and
athletic programs as house counselors and coaches, and frequently are
involved in other student activities. Each Teaching Fellow is matched with
a faculty mentor, and attends Teaching Fellow seminars, departmental and
whole faculty meetings. There are on average twelve Teaching Fellows per
year. A stipend of $16,000, medical, dental, and life insurance, housing in
a school dormitory or house, and meals in the school dining hall are
provided. Fields open to Teaching Fellows include arts and humanities,
languages, math and sciences, physical education, and Community Service.

TEACHING FELLOWSHIPS IN COMMUNITY SERVICE
The Phillips Academy Community Service Program strives to develop
partnerships between Phillips Academy and local agencies that build upon
community assets and provide unique educational opportunities for students
and faculty. The Community Service Program consists of three main
components: 1) an extensive co-curricular volunteer program, 2) student
leadership development through project coordination, and 3)
service-learning courses across the curriculum. Service opportunities
include youth and elderly services, housing and hunger, health, political
action, work with immigrant populations, and work with special needs
populations. The projects take place at sites in Andover and the
surrounding communities, with most projects working in the neighboring city
of Lawrence. The Community Service Office works with over thirty agencies,
involving over 400 students and 20 faculty members each trimester.
Activities include placements in day care centers and after-school
programs, team-building initiatives such as Habi
tat for Humanity, arts-based programs, and one-day service events.
In the spring of 1999, Phillips Academy was named a National
Service-Learning Leader School by the Corporation for National Service.
During this inaugural year, PA was one of 70 schools nationwide and one of
four in Massachusetts to earn this honor for programs that combine
academics with community service in a way that benefits students, teaches
civic responsibility, and strengthens communities.
Since 1994, Teaching Fellowships in Community Service have allowed
recent college graduates or those with one or two years experience in the
field to play a prominent role in running Phillips Academy?s Community
Service program. Teaching Fellows serve as Assistant Directors, managing
various aspects of the program along with the Director of Community
Service. Teaching Fellows mentor student coordinators, meet with agency
contacts, transport student volunteers, and participate on the faculty
advisory board. Teaching Fellows can also be involved in the academic
program with instructors who incorporate community work into their courses.
Teaching Fellows in Community Service learn how to teach beyond the scope
of the classroom, coordinate existing programs, strengthen and build ties
with the community, and help determine the future of the program as a
whole.

The deadline to apply for a Community Service Teaching Fellowship is
