Hello, all. Here's perhaps an odd question from a newbie. I'd appreciate
anything you could tell me. I teach English at a two-year branch of a state
university in a very culturally isolated part of the U.S. Ours is the only
campus in our state where students can apply and gain entrance even if their
entrance exam scores are low. We offer remedial programs in English and Math
to help them gain sufficient skill levels to hold their own with fellow
students. Many students, however, need individual instruction from tutors if
they are to succeed. We are very interested in beginning an Americorps program
in reading skills to serve this population, but have found no similar programs
to use for reference. If you know of any programs designed to offer individual
literacy training to incoming college freshmen, we'd sure like to hear about
them. Thanks for your time.
