Good Afternoon Karen!

Here at Chatham, we have made service learning a component of our First Year
Writing Seminar class. It is the comparative to English Comp 101 at other
colleges and universities. Right now our First Year students are engaging
in two weeks of service. From October 16th to 29th, they have to complete a
minimum of eight and a maximum of ten hours per student. Students who wish
to do more are permitted. We take away their class time which is 1-1:50
MWF. It hs been done for many years and as a Chatham alum I participated
and loved it. I think the various sites we have to choose from makes it
easier to pick what you like and what fits your schedule. I hope this
helps!

Does anyone know of any research or have any opinions on the ideal number of
service-learning hours to involve in a course? Also, is there any
information
on whether or not to make it optional or required? I would love to hear
what
works best for people and why? Thanks a lot---
