Higher Education for A New Century: Partnerships, Productivity, Performance
June 29-July 1, 2000
Los Angeles, California

As the 21st Century begins, the US economy appears robust and optimism
pervades much of American life. Higher education, however, is beset with a
variety of vexing questions: Why is there so little communication and
cooperation between K-12 and post-secondary education? Do faculty still
need tenure to protect academic freedom? What should society expect of
faculty? How might colleges and universities become more relevant to the
array of problems that currently pervade civic life? What do colleges and
universities need to do to reform? Are higher education institutions even
still necessary, or are there other ways to deliver a postsecondary
education?

Answers to such questions are the focus of Higher Education for a New
Century. They seek proposals, presenters, and participants who want to
think "out of the box" and move academe forcefully into a new century.

The conference will have three themes. The first theme pertains to the
connections between K-12 and postsecondary education. The second theme
deals with changing faculty roles and rewards. The third theme concerns
organizational performance.

Keynote speakers include Alexander Astin (UCLA), Roger Benjamin (RAND
Corporation), Arthur Levine (Teachers College, Columbia University), John
Brooks Slaughter (USC), Catherine Stimpson (New York University), William
G. Tierney (USC), and Cornel West (invited, Harvard University). Sponsored
by the Center for Higher Education Policy Analysis, Center for Urban
Education, USC Rossier School of Education.

Proposals must be received by Monday April 10, 2000. Questions, need more
