David,
Students in my own and my colleague John Zuern's
upper-division "Rhetoric, Composition and Computer" classes
have completed a range of writing assignments. They start with a
definitional essay about technological literacy. After sorting out some
of those issues, they move on to designing
on-line and paper-based resource materials for computer skill workshops
for two target communities: residents of the largest public housing
complex in our state, and senior citizens who return to college after
retirement. An on-going assignment has them developing and testing
web-based resource materials for the target communities: at last glance,
they had developed pages devoted to citizenship, public housing, and
senior citizen interests and concerns. (The seniors proved a more
inviting topic; my students found it difficult to identify needs and find
resources related to the public housing residents.)
