AmeriCorps*VISTA Afterschool Coordinators-Community Schools Rhode Island
Organization: United Way of Rhode Island, 229 Waterman St., Providence, RI
Salary: $9,984 yearly living allowance before taxes, full-time for one year,
starting end of January
Job Description:
Community Schools Rhode Island is seeking four (4) AmeriCorps*VISTA Afterschool
Coordinators to help with the development, implementation, and enhancement of
Community Schools Rhode Island.
The four VISTA opportunities are in the following locations: Goff Community
School at Goff Junior High, Pawtucket, RI; Newport Community School at Thompson
Middle School, Newport, RI; West End Community School at Gilbert Stuart Middle
School in Providence, RI; West Warwick Community School at Deering Middle
School in West Warwick, RI
The Community Schools Rhode Island Initiative is a major undertaking of the
United Way of Rhode Island. The Initiative's ultimate goal is to increase the
success of middle school youth academically, socially and emotionally. Its
primary strategies support the development of successful partnerships between
schools, families, and communities to create high-quality, enriching,
comprehensive, and integrated programs for middle school youth within and
beyond the traditional school day and school year.
Tasks and Activities:
* Assist in the development of brochures and other publication materials
for Community Schools Rhode Island sites
* Help plan and implement targeted public engagement events, trainings,
and workshops
* Research and catalog funding opportunities in out-of-school time;
assist in writing grants
* the design and implementation of staff development and community
education
* program enhancement, research of program providers, community contacts
and promotion of program
* the enhancement of program quality
* community education and parent outreach

Qualifications: BA/BS; background in education, youth development,
communications, grant writing, education, or related field. Send letter

Skills:
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Ability to work with diverse constituents, strong interpersonal skills
* Computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office, (Pagemaker
and Publisher a plus)
* Must be able to work in a fast-paced team environment, as well as
independently
* Some experience in event planning
* Some experience in community development, organizing, and engagement
strategies
* Some experience in communications/marketing, fundraising or
grant-writing
* Facilitation experience and/or training a plus
* Interest in and experience with youth development and education a plus
There are 4 basic standards which qualify an applicant for AmeriCorps*VISTA
service:
* Must be 18 years of age or older upon entering Pre-Service Orientation
* Must take an oath of office upon enrollment into VISTA
* Must be in a position to offer full-time service for one full year
(37.5 hrs/wk)
* Must complete a Pre-Service Orientation (PSO) prior to the start of
term of service
