Service Learning in Architecture
10 November 2002 01:13 UTC
Thanks to everyone who contacted me regarding service learning in
architecture. As promised the following is a summary of the information I
received from the list serve. If you have additional information,
suggestions or questions feel free to drop me an email at rmichal535@cs.com.

Check out Syracuse's great S-L program. It's centered in
Architecture but is multi-disciplinary.
***************
We have had an ongoing, introductory course in Architecture (except for the
past year when the faculty member received a new appointment) that always
carried a service-learning component. However, the focus was a bit different
than what you specifically requested. It addressed civic engagement and
activism, allowing the voice of the inhabitants of the area to be part of
their built environment.
****************
Awesome model is Kenneth Reardon who used to be faculty at University of
Illinois- I think it was called the East St. Louis Project....they have a web
site somewhere...

Campus Compact has a syllabi project that may help identify
institutions. There are a few examples of college/universities
incorporating service-learning into architecture courses. Click on
the link below and find the link to Service-Learning Syllabi Project.

I would suggest you look at the Arts of Citizenship program at the
University of Michigan. Their website is
http://www.artsofcitizenship.umich.edu/.

That is everything that I have received to date. If you are interested, I
would recommend looking through the service learning archives. Per my
original posting I found that Dean Pribbenow of the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee had posted a similar request regarding service learning
in architecture. He posted his results on September 22, 1999. As a result
of his posting and my research to date, I think we will be focusing our case
study research on three architecture service learning studio programs: 1)
Auburn's Rural Studio, 2) Sutdio 804 at the University of Kansas, and 3)
Yale's Building Project (first year graduate studio).
Thanks again,
Rich Michal
graduate research assistant
