National Gathering for Service-Learning Educators
12 May 1999 20:39 UTC
The announcement below describes a wonderful opportunity for groups and
individuals interested in service-learning. If you check out the
registration on the Web page, you will see that there are special discounts
for campus-community teams, and I believe Campus Compact still has available
some $300 scholarships for community partners. We talk often about being
committed to true partnerships, and this is an opportunity to include our
community partners!
For those of you not familiar with Invisible College, it is "an expandig
circle of educators" that "fosters and promotes community service learnig as
an effective educational tool. The Invisible College recognizes the
transforming power of service learning to involve the academy as a resosible
and inclusive member of the diverse community."
Invisible College National Gathering '99
June 24-26
UMASS at Amherst
Amherst, Massachusetts
One of the goals and one of the strengths of the Invisible College
is that it works to build ongoing communities of learners who support
each other in doing service learning and addressing issues around
service learning. Its intent has been from its conception to be a
place of sharing, learning and growing that is ongoing.
The National Gathering is an annual event, which allows participants to
share
in-depth discussions on service learning. The Gathering invites all
interested members of the service learning community to join us in
developing and exploring these topics. Unlike most conferences, the
Gathering provides participants with the opportunity to join learning
circles which go beyond formal presentations and allows Gathering
participants to examine issues in-depth. The goal to the Gathering is
to learning by being involved in the process of discovery. The
Gathering also provides participants the opportunity to meet and share
information with other service learning practitioners.
In addition, this year's Gathering is providing four optional workshops
on Thursday, June 24. The workshops include: Service Learning 101,
Discussion on Service Learning Scholarship, SL Reflection Workshop, and
SL for Community Partners.
Information concerning the National Gathering can be found on
the Invisible College web site or calling Tim Schindler (503-725-8452).
