An article I have found to be helpful in explaining the continuum is by
Andrew Furco, "Service-Learning: A Balanced Approach to Experiential
Education," in Expanding Boundaries: Service and Learning (available
through an organization called the Community Campus Partnerships for
Health). He builds on Sigmon's typology and explores distinctions among
different kinds of experiential education as well as different kinds of
service.
Sigmon (1994):
service-LEARNING
Learning goals primary; service outcomes secondary
SERVICE-learning
Service outcomes primary; learning goals secondary
service-learning
Service and learning goals completely separate
SERVICE-LEARNING
Service and learning goals of equal weight and each enhances the other
for all participants
Furco (This table may not be clear over e-mail, but here's a try):
Recipient ---------------------BENEFICIARY-----------------Provider
Service -------------------------- FOCUS-------------------- Learning
SERVICE-LEARNING
COMMUNITY SERVICE FIELD EDUCATION
VOLUNTEERISM INTERNSHIP
Hope that helps!
