The American Association of Community Colleges is pleased to
announce the availability of a new publication, "Best
Practices in Service Learning: Building a National Community
College Network, 1994-1997."

This 16-page project brief summarizes AACC's three-year
national Learn and Serve America: Higher Education project.
It includes implementation, outcomes, and features of 10
community college model programs. The brief also describes
AACC's innovative mentor team model, national clearinghouse,
and organizational, electronic, and print resources.

The project brief is not meant to be an all-encompassing
description of service learning best practices, but rather
tells the stories of 10 colleges and how they successfully
implemented and sustained programs on their campuses and in
their communities. Other institutions of higher education,
K-12 schools, and community organizations may find these
proven strategies useful as well.

Accomplishments of the national project include sustainable
service learning programs; a comprehensive national
database; organizational collaboration; leadership
development; practical publications; a Web site and links;
and an emerging consultant network.

The 10 grantee colleges involved in AACC's project and
included in the brief are:

Albuquerque TVI Community College, Albuquerque, NM
Alpena Community College, Alpena, MI
Flathead Valley Community College, Kalispell, MT
Hocking College, Nelsonville, OH
Johnson County Community College, Overland Park, KS
Kapi`olani Community College, Honolulu, HI
Monroe Community College, Rochester, NY
Northern Virginia Community College, Manassas, VA
Prestonsburg Community College, Prestonsburg, KY
Truman College, Chicago, IL

The five institutions represented on AACC's service learning
mentor team are:

Chandler-Gilbert Community College, Chandler, AZ
Community College of Aurora, Aurora, CO
Hagerstown Junior College, Hagerstown, MD
Miami-Dade Community College, Miami, FL
Piedmont Virginia Community College, Charlottesville, VA

"Best Practices in Service Learning" will be distributed to
participants at the Campus Compact National Center for
Community Colleges annual conference, Scottsdale, AZ, May
20-22; the Invisible College National Gathering, Portland,
OR, June 18-21; and the National Society for Experiential
Education annual conference, Norfolk, VA, October 21-24.

If you will not be attending any of the above conferences
but would like a copy of "Best Practices in Service
Learning," a limited number of single copies are available
at no cost from the AACC Service Learning Clearinghouse.
Requests for copies will be fulfilled beginning June 1. The
