There is a reason that you didn't find it. I mistakenly put the wrong year
on the citation. It is actually "in press" right now in the Review of
Higher Education (this is a journal - I don't know if it is online or not).
Anyway, the reason that you didn't find it is because it hasn't been
published yet.
Another option is to look up either of the following articles:
Sax, L. J. and Astin, A. W. (1997 - summer/fall issue). The Benefits of
Service: Evidence form Undergraduates. Educational Record, vol 78, p.
25-32.
Astin, A.W. (1996). The role of service in higher education. About
Campus, 1(1): 14-19. (This article provides a summary of many of the HERI
studies, including the findings in the "Long Term effects" article that is
in press).
