Hi, I am a student at Western Washington University and an employee of our
campus Center for Service-Learning. Our largest service day here in
Bellingham is "Make A Difference Day", held the third Saturday in October.
Because this day is well advertized in our community, we have many
community agencies who plan volunteer assignments for that specific day.
They either contact us or we call around to see what kind of work is being
organized for Make A Difference Day. We are then responsible for advertising
on campus and recruiting students. We post flyers about the service day
and include the Center's location on the flyer, so that students can come
into the office and sign up for a specific project. We also, for the
first time this year, have elected service-learning representatives in
each of the residence halls. We inform them about this day in advance,
so they can spread the word in their respective halls and send people to
us that way as well.
Once the day draws near, we simply call each agency and let them know how
many students we will be sending them (how many signed up for that job).
For those that added on the sign-up sheet that they needed transportation,
we usually rent university vans and have Center for Service-Learning
employees sign up to drive the shuttles. Reflection has been the most
difficult part to incorporate, because all of the agencies have different
shifts. In the future, it would be wise to elect one person from each
site as a group leader, and work alongside them to help them plan a
reflection activity for their specific group. I hope this helps...any
more questions, email baer@cc.wwu.edu Thanks and good luck!!
