Western Region Campus Compact Consortium
1998 CONTINUUMS OF SERVICE REGIONAL CONFERENCE

Portland State University, Portland, Oregon
June 16 - 18, 1998

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

CONFERENCE MISSION

This June 16-18, the Western Region Campus Compact Consortium, in
collaboration with the American Association of Community Colleges and the
National Service-Learning in Teacher Education Partnership, is hosting a
regional service-learning conference. With the theme of institutionalizing
service-learning, we invite service-learning practitioners from across the
continuum to gather together, participate in active and collaborative
learning and reflect on the critical issues of the day. Theme-related
topics will be explored in sessions highlighting people, programs and
resources in the Western region.

The Western Region Campus Compact Consortium and the National
Service-Learning in Teacher Education partnership receive generous support
and funding from the Corporation for National Service, Learn and Serve:
Higher Education.

CONFERENCE FORMAT

The 1998 Continuums of Service Regional Conference will offer instructional
and discussion sessions to meet the diverse learning styles and experience
levels of conference participants. Sessions will be selected that not only
share solutions but that also ask critical questions so that we may all
explore alternative ways of building service-learning programs that respond
to the unique character of our individual campuses and communities.
Participants will be able to choose from workshops, labs, presentations,
discussion salons, networking sessions and panel clinics. Specific session
information will be provided with a participant packet to be mailed in
early June. Look for sessions tailored to meet the needs of faculty,
community service-learning staff members, students, community based
organizations and other service-learning practitioners.

In addition, the Continuums of Service Conference will offer two strands;
one each for teacher education and community college service-learning
practitioners. Sessions specific to these strands will be identified in
the forthcoming participant packet.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Edward Zlotkowski is Professor of English at Bentley College and founder of
the Bentley Service-Learning Project. He is Senior Associate at the
American Association for Higher Education.
Dr. Zlotkowksi will address the historical importance, challenges and
successes of institutionalizing service-learning on higher education
campuses, highlighting Western region campuses documented in his new book:
Successful Service-Learning Programs: New Models of Excellence in Higher
Education.

Community Keynote: A community-based individual experienced with
service-learning will address the conference focusing on the power,
pitfalls and promise of high quality campus-community partnerships.

PLENARY

Join us Tuesday evening, June 16th, for an interactive discussion of
"Service-Learning in the West: Growing a Regional Perspective." The plenary
will be facilitated by regional service-learning practitioners and leaders,
including the four Western Region Campus Compact Consortium State Executive
Directors. Participants will explore some of the unique and varied
characteristics that face service-learning practitioners in the Western
region as we work to build and enhance more effective education models.
The discussion will help to chart continuums of thought and action in the
years to come.

HIGHLIGHT OF REGIONAL SPEAKERS

ANDREW FURCO, Director of Service-Learning Research & Development at
University of California, Berkeley.
Join Dr. Furco for workshops that will explore the challenges of conducting
service-learning evaluation; he will provide a step-by-step process for
working through the series of inherent trade-offs that must be considered
to design your evaluation program.

AMY DRISCOLL, Director, Center for Academic Excellence, Portland State
University.
Portland State University is one model of a campus that has succeeded in
"institutionalizing" service-learning. Join Dr. Driscoll for a salon
discussion of the criteria and characteristics of sustaining
service-learning efforts.

BOB FRANCO, Associate Professor, Anthropology, Kapi'olani Community
College, National Service-Learning Mentor for Campus Compact National
Center for Community
Colleges.
"Faculty as Cultural Brokers in Service-Learning." Participate in a
faculty development workshop exploring the diverse traditions of service
and multiculturalism.

RICHARD CONE, Director, Joint Educational Project, University of Southern
California.
"Campus-Community Partnerships." A critical component of
institutionalizing a service-learning program on campus is to develop a
partnership with a limited number of community partners. This interactive
salon session will provide participants with an opportunity to explore
alternative models of partnership and the strengths and weaknesses of both.

KIM JOHNSON-BOGART, Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Education, University
of Washington.
Will service-learning grow or will it fade as many other reforms have in
the past? What does the transformed institution look like? The
development and future of service-learning will be discussed in the context
of historical thought and other current issues affecting higher education.

Other Western region presenters, including several WRCCC Continuums of
Service campus and community partners, will present on their
service-learning institutionalization efforts. Sessions will also be
offered addressing additional field generated topics, including: faculty
development; campus-community partnerships; institutional development;
sustainability; departmental development; networking; and student development.
