If you are talking about students providing volunteer labor to for-profits,
I would advise you speak to a human resources attorney. It is generally
unlawfulto volunteer in a for-profit unless they have set up a nonprofit
foundation to house that work --- as many hospitals do. It's a violation
of the Fair Labor Standards Act. The small business owners could get into
quite a lot of trouble on several levels.
