Subject: RE: Service Learning Certificate
Ryan,
The University of Utah offers a Service-Learning Scholars
Program
that requires: 1)400 hours of community service 2) 10 credit hours
(semester) of s/l classes and 3) a final integrative service project. Our
service-learning office is also based in Student Affairs and has been for
the past ten years. The students receive certificates of achievement, wear
cords of distinction at commencement and are recognized in the convocation
programs, and have the s/l designation printed on their transcript.
None of this was easy to move through! The history of the
program in
our brochure. If you send me your mailing address, I'd be happy to send you
one. Cheers, Meg

Subject: Service Learning Certificate
Greetings!
At Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas, we are in the process of
putting a plan together to present to the Council of Deans for the
implementation of a Service Learning Certificate Program. Our purpose is to
allow those courses that have distinguished Service Learning in their
curriculum be designated and students that choose to take those courses
meeting the hourly requirement will receive a certificate. Fort Hays State
University requires 12 credit hours for a certificate to be awarded in a
program.
We have a quasi Service Learning program set up to aid those instructors
that are interested in establishing Service Learning in their courses. The
Service Learning program has been administered out of the University's
Student Affairs Office over the last year and half, however, an office that
is not academic cannot issue certificates for academic programs.
So, questions, I would like to know of any programs and certificates that
are out their and what academic departments are they administered out of
and why? Second, any information that anyone has when they began
establishing such a program and certificate and the obstacles that you had
to go through.
Thank you for your help!
