readings

Hello fellow list-servers
I know many of you have started summer holidays and have disappeared off
campus for the summer months. However, I was hoping that those of you who
work through these summer months might be able to give me a few suggestions.
I am looking for a couple of readings/articles on the following to topics:
history of volunteerism and critical reflection for volunteers. I know that
there are loads of articles out there however, I am looking for readings
that are specifically suited for undergraduate students. The readings are
for an introductory module entitled Community Service and Learning. The
module enables students to get credit for volunteering. In class we explore
the history of the community/voluntary sector, history of community
development, examine the ethos of the sector, look at current issues in the
sector, etc. We also look at skill building - leadership, teamwork,
communication, etc.
We draw students from a wide variety of courses - engineering to sociology.
In addition students take this as an extra module on-top of a full course
load. The module is therefore and necessarily superficial when it comes to
history and development.
I say all this because I need 'light' articles that would appeal to the
novice student volunteer looking for a bit of background information to help
them place their experience in a larger context.
Any suggestions without much jargon or gory detail would be welcomed. Even
better if it was available on the Internet!
Cheers
Amy
