CSU Monterey Bay is searching to fill the position of Assistant Director
for the Service Learning Institute. The Assistant Director is responsible
for directing the Service Learning Institute's student leadership program,
and for managing the support structures for service learning courses
campus-wide.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Under the general supervision of the Director of the Service Learning
Institute (SLI), the Assistant Director is responsible for directing the
SLI’s student leadership program and for managing the processes that
provide partnership support for service learning courses. The Assistant
Director is responsible for providing training and overall program
direction for CSUMB’s student leadership program, supervising the service
placement process, and providing guidance for all of the SLI’s academic
outreach and advising activities on campus. The Assistant Director serves
as the principal liaison with Student Affairs programs and activities, and
provides leadership for the SLI in the absence of the Director.
Service Learning Student Leadership Program (SLSLP): Oversees all aspects
of student leadership program, including evaluation, training,
professional development, and the continuous renewal of the SLSLP.
Manages overall SLSLP budget, communicating funding needs and expenditures
regularly to the Director. Develops and facilitates Summer of Service
Leadership Academy curriculum and University Service Advocate (USA)
training. Designs, implements, and administers the recruitment and
selection process for the USAs and Americorps Education Award Only
Programs. Develops materials and workshops to provide guidance and
training to staff and faculty supervisors, ensuring effective
relationships with program participants. Advises Residential Life
Co-Curricular Service Learning Committee. Plans and coordinates program
recognition and appreciation events for program participants and community
sponsors. Creates and presents program reports and presentations, as
needed.
Service Learning Partnership and Placement Process: Provides overall
direction and coordination to insure high quality community partnership
support for service learning courses. Establishes frameworks,
responsibilities, and timelines for community service placement process.
Provides leadership, supervision, training, development, and evaluation of
assigned staff and students related to placement process. Insures
relevant service learning training for faculty and community partners.
Facilitates community partnership information exchange among program
staff. Develops and oversees the distribution of the Service Learning
Guide for Students and other essential materials.
Academic Outreach, Advising, and Co-Curricular Service Learning: Provides
direction for programming and assists in establishing policy regarding
academic advising and co-curricular service learning initiatives.
Develops and implements programming and workshops for Freshman and Major
ProSeminars raising awareness of and generating enthusiasm for the service
learning program. Advises and trains students, faculty, and other campus
departments regarding program requirements. Provides leadership for
Residential Education, and other academic support units’ development of
co-curricular service activities and programs.
Institute Leadership: Assists SLI Director in overall direction and policy
development and assists in facilitating strategic planning, staff
development retreats and meetings. Develops the annual calendar of
institute-wide training initiatives; partners with SLI staff in
appropriate training design and delivery. Serves as the SLI liaison with
Student Affairs and university committees (e.g., Orientation & Welcome
Week, Graduation & Student Awards, and Student Success committees).
Collaborates with the Service Learning team to carry out the CSUMB Vision
and SLI Philosophy and Mission. Provides leadership for the SLI in the
absence of the Director. Performs other duties, as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with diverse
students, faculty, staff and community partners in a multicultural
environment. Familiarity and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement.
Ability to gather varied data, analyze complex problems, visualize
operational and program implications, develop alternative approaches and
take appropriate action. Ability to plan for short and long-range needs.
Knowledge of sound management practices and the ability to cultivate,
organize, evaluate and manage a dynamic staff. Ability to make effective
judgments and perform a variety of administrative duties. Commitment to
cultivating social responsibility, cultural awareness and an ethic of
civic engagement, both personally and professionally. Demonstrated
ability in developing and implementing service learning curriculum and
training to facilitate student leadership development. Ability to
communicate clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing.
Ability to use a personal computer and applicable software.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution AND three
years experience in developing and implementing student leadership and
service learning programs or a related field. Personal and professional
awareness of effectively working in diverse communities and computer
literacy.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters degree. MacIntosh operating system knowledge. Bilingual in
Spanish. Highly desirable: Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to
the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect,
collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity,
community service and institutional excellence. Experience working with a
diverse and multicultural population and performing community services;
demonstrated technical literacy.
SALARY: Commensurate with experience plus excellent paid benefits. This is
an exempt position and as such is not eligible for the overtime provisions
of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
