Dear Colleagues,

Several of you have called and e-mailed me regarding the focus of October's First Annual International Conference on Service-Learning Research. I would like to clarify a couple of things.

CONFERENCE FOCUS
Please note that the focus of the conference is on service-learning RESEARCH, NOT on "international service-learning". The term "international" is being used for the purpose of opening up the conferencing to our friends and colleagues in other countries who are working to advance service-learning research. Individuals from outside the U.S. have a hard time justifying cost and time to attend an American "national" conference. Hence, we've made this an "international" conference.

But, the focus of the conference will be on SERVICE-LEARNING RESEARCH (e.g., presenting and discussing the findings of new service-learning studies, methodological and theoretical advances in the study of service-learning, and recently completed agendas for conducting service-learning research). And by "service-learning", for the purpose of this conference, we mean the engagement of STUDENTS (K-12 education, teacher education, and higher education) in service activities that are integrated with their academic work or educational activities. However, research on other forms of service-learning (co-curricular, non-curricular service-learning) may be included.

I hope this clarifies a few issues about the conference. The registration materials will be out in a couple of weeks. It will include registration fee for the conference (which will be about $300/person) and hotel information (about $125 night). I STRONGLY encourage you to register early (there will be an August 15 early bird registration). Space is VERY limited.

If you have further questions beyond what I've stated above, please let me know. I hope to see you in October.

Best,

Andy
