Colleagues:

I would like to draw your attention to an exciting development in higher
education, the founding of THE NATIONAL ACADEMY FOR ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP,
Dr. Robert M. Diamond, President (http://www.TheNationalAcademy.org).
The academy serves higher education through its scheduled and customized
workshops, consulting, publications, and Web-based support.

The National Academy helps decision makers (presidents, CAOs, deans,
chairs, faculty and board members, and others) become aware of and
systematically apply research and best practice to their own campus and
system efforts in areas such as leadership, effecting significant and
sustained change, learning and student development, and assessment.

Please visit and bookmark The National Academy’s Web site
(http://www.TheNationalAcademy.org), consider how the academy can help
you in your own work, and call the academy to the attention of
colleagues and decision makers whom you believe may find its services
helpful.

FREE QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER

The academy publishes a free quarterly electronic newsletter. The
current issue and instructions for subscribing are on the academy’s Web
site at http://www.TheNationalAcademy.org/Newsletters/newsletter.html.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

The academy has scheduled two important workshops for the summer of 2000
and one for the fall. Each workshop is briefly described below and more
fully on the academy’s Web site
(http://www.TheNationalAcademy.org/Programs/programs.html.) In each
workshop, participants will have the benefit of skilled instruction and
the assistance of nationally known researchers and practitioners.

I. PROGRAM DESIGN, IMPLEMENTATION, AND ASSESSMENT: A workshop for deans,
their chairs, and key faculty leaders. July 21-26, 2000, Blue Mountain
Lake, New York.

This workshop-retreat provides an opportunity for deans and key
department chairs and faculty members to work together, away from the
daily demands of campus, on an important academic change-related project
such as curricular reform, realigning faculty rewards with the
educational mission, developing an assessment program, and exploring how
to use technology effectively.

II. EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP IN A TIME OF UNRELENTING CHANGE: A workshop for
new deans. July 28-August 2, 2000, Blue Mountain Lake, New York.

New deans will welcome an opportunity to gain insight into the
complexities of leadership in a time of major change in higher
education. This workshop will include issues such as improving teaching
and learning, budget and personnel, allocating resources, gathering and
using assessment data, and furthering faculty development.

III. ACADEMIC CHANGE AND STRATEGIC RESOURCE ALLOCATION: A
workshop-retreat
for chief academic and financial officers and, as appropriate, the
president and one or more board members. November 19-22, 2000, St.
Petersburg, Florida.

This workshop, cosponsored by AGB and NACUBO, will help participants
understand how to use financial resources to improve learning and
develop financial strategies for change.

Reserve places in one or more workshop while space remains.
