Kansas State University's Community Service Program has conducted a number
of community development projects in rural areas over the past several
years. Contact the CSP's Director, Carol Peak, at cpeak@ksu.edu, for more
info.

You may have already heard from her regarding your question, but if not, I
would recommend contacting Michelle Ajamian, who heads up Rural Action in
Athens, Ohio. She's a committed s-l advocate and member of the Invisible
College--she's facilitating our community dinner at this year's gathering
for service-learning educators in June. Her email address is
ajamian@frognet.net

Best of luck,
Jennifer

The Learn and Serve America National Service-Learning Clearinghouse has put
together a resource list on the topic of rural service-learning that can be
found at http://umn.edu/~serve/res/faqs/rural.htm. We also have a database
of
program descriptions you can search by visiting http://umn.edu/~serve
(choose
"Databases" from our main menu, then select "Programs.") 373 K-12 programs
appear when you search for programs in a rural setting, and 3 higher ed
programs
appear when you perform that search.

I hope this information is helpful!

We are working with a local rural school district in Britton's Neck,
SC, to write up their experiences in service learning for our Linking
Learning With Life series of service learning publications. The book
should be available in the fall. It does target K-12.

The students there built and maintain the community park and they
also built the fire station, among other things. Much of their work
is led by the districts Learn and Serve Coordinator, Jerry Pace. You
could probably find information about this on the SC Dept. of Ed. web
page. www.state.sc.us/sde. They did a great deal to bring the
community together to make these decisions of what they needed, and
what each could do to meet the identified needs.

In addition, Clemson is a landgrant university so many of the
projects our faculty work with are in rural areas of the state. There
might be something on our web site here, www.clemson.edu/learning.

Good luck!

I'm coordinating the Statewide Local Government CECH-UP Program in Missouri.
This program, designed to teach middle school students about and involve
them in local government. It has been done with St.Louis area middle
schools for four years now and, now with funding from University Extension
and Outreach, is starting to expand throughout the state.

Contact me if you want more information.

I would look into the National 4-H's Innovation Center for Community and
Youth Development. They have several projects, including Bridging the Gap of

Isolation, for rural commuities to engage youth in community development.
Depending on your definition, these activities may intersect with
service-learning practices. The website is www.fourhcouncil.edu/cyd/

Good luck,

It's not a research article, but it's an article about service-learning and
rural community development issues. We asked Mark Lapping, Provost at the
University of Southern Maine, to write it for our rural service-learning
project. You can find it at:

http://abacus.bates.edu/mcc/lapping.htm

Good luck, and please share other articles you may find.
Thanks,
Liz
