Dear Anne-Louise--and the list:

Although it may not be of tremendous help to you, my colleagues and I wrote a (largely descriptive) paper on just this very topic in the Journal of Prevention and Intervention in the Community.  The reference is:
Switzer, C. L., Switzer, G. E., Stukas, A. A., & Baker, C. E. (1999). Medical students’ motivations to volunteer.  Journal of Prevention and Intervention in the Community, 18(1/2), 53-64.  Also published as a chapter in J. R. Ferrari & J.G. Chapman (Eds.), Educating students to make a difference:  Community-based service learning (pp. 53-64).  Binghamton, NY:  Haworth Press.

Also, I'm about to move to LaTrobe University in Melbourne as a lecturer in the school of psychological sciences.  What can you (or anyone on the list) tell me about service-learning in Australia?

Thanks much,

Art

I am currently invovled in a project of community service learning for
medical students and am wondering if anyone can help me locate research
articles on the topic.  The particular area that I am currently looking at
is how we can improve the teaching of medical students through service
learning  and the most effective ways of doing this (ie: what we can do in
the classroom and in the field to assist students to get the most out of
their
experience)

I would appreciate your help.  Many thanks
