Dear Service Colleagues,

Please join us this year for the VA COOL Sixth Annual Symposium on
Integrating Service with the Curriculum, Virginia's only statewide
service-learning conference for faculty, staff and administrators.

WHO: Faculty, staff and administrators from colleges in Virginia and
neighboring states

WHAT: VA COOL's Sixth Annual Symposium on Integrating Service with the
Curriculum
"Meeting Community Need Through The Classroom"

WHEN: June 15, 2000

WHERE: James Madison University
         Harrisonburg, Virginia

For the past five years, VA COOL’s Symposium on Integrating Service with
the Curriculum has brought together faculty, staff and administrators from
campuses throughout Virginia to meet with one another and nationally
recognized experts to discuss service integration into course content,
including current issues that educators face with service-learning
implementation.

This year’s 6th Annual Symposium, Meeting Community Need Through The
Classroom will focus on the responsibilities educators face when engaging
students in socially responsible service within their communities. As
service-learning continues its popularity at institutions, we hope to
continue national discussions concerning our responsibility to those
communities to which we send students. Realizing that community service is
a vital tool in helping make the academic abstract concrete, we also hope
that this year's Symposium will provoke thought and conversation as to how
we further our relationships with our community partners.

Join us for "Service-Learning Basics," where sessions will focus on the
nuts and bolts of service-learning implementation. We will also offer
sessions of various skill level and will include workshops, panel
discussions, break-out sessions and networking time designed to meet the
needs of new and experienced service-learning practitioners from two- and
four-year colleges. Topics may include faculty roles in creating
sustainable partnerships, models of collaboration for community
development, and participatory action research.

We hope to see you in June.
