We¹re pleased to announceŠ
SCALE'S READ. WRITE. ACT. CONFERENCE
OCTOBER 27-29, 2000
at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
The Student Coalition for Action in Literacy Education (SCALE) is a
network of college students, learners, administrators, literacy
practitioners and community partners. Our mission is to support
campus-based literacy programs by providing resources, training,
consultation, professional development and networking opportunities in
an effort to increase program effectiveness, enhance student involvement
and leadership, and to encourage the use of participatory approaches in
both tutoring and program management. SCALE is funded (like your
program) by the Corporation for National Service and is part of the
University of North Carolina¹s School of Education.
Join campus-based literacy leaders and representatives from across the
nation to share and learn through an intensive weekend of workshops,
panel discussions, structured networking opportunities, and SCALE-guided
reflection sessions.
This is the only national gathering for campus-based literacy programs!
Don't miss it!

SCALE's National Read.Write. Act. Conference is a terrific networking
opportunity and learning event. It offers the chance for campus-based
literacy groups to share best practices, learn new skills, challenge
assumptions and develop ideas to build better literacy programs. We
guarantee this high-energy event will reinvigorate you and provide new
contacts and possibilities for your literacy work!
Past attendees say:
"I thought it was very organized. I like the format‹encouraged me to
think and act."
"Very progressive, innovative, well-planned, very helpful staff, good
food, nice size‹not too small or too big, nice diversity from all over
the country/backgrounds."
"I feel motivated into action. Now that I am more knowledgable I feel
more equipped to get going. And the reflective SCALE goal setting
sessions have steered me in the right direction."
"The summit was extremely beneficial for sharing problems and ideas and
for generating possibilities. It made me aware of other literacy
efforts like mine and I now have contacts with program coordinators at
schools near mine."
You will have the outstanding opportunity to participate in top-quality
workshops offered by national leaders in the literacy field. You will
also meet and network with other campus-based literacy programs, share
your ideas and program strengths and leave the conference with a new
network of peers to further support you and your work.
Conference Workshop Themes will include:
Advocacy and Social Justice
Community Partnerships
Model Programs
Participatory Education
Tutoring Techniques
Policy Issues
Service Learning

Technology
