POSITION DESCRIPTION: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Organizational Mission
The Campus Outreach Opportunity League (COOL) is a national, non-profit
organization that promotes and supports student involvement in community
service. COOL’s mission is to educate and empower college students to
strengthen our nation through service. Since 1984, COOL has implemented
programs which have involved thousands and thousands of students in
community service, fostered student leadership within the field, and
raised awareness on a national level of students’ roles in community
development. COOL works in partnership with a wide range of collaborating
organizations, including colleges and universities, community-based
organizations, state Campus Compacts, and others involved in the field.
Position Description
Basic Responsibilities:
COOL’s Executive Director is responsible for providing leadership to the
organization as it strives to fulfill its mission as a leader in the
community service field. The Executive Director must provide vision in
organizational development while managing the day-to-day functions of the
national office.
Specific Responsibilities:
• Provide leadership to all COOL initiatives and promote community
service among students through strategic planning;
• Develop and implement an effective fund development plan for the
organization;
• Manage COOL’s overall budget and make recommendations to the board of
directors on expense and revenue positions;
• Manage a staff of six as well as consultants and interns;
• Provide general oversight for all COOL programs and services,
including a national conference, web site, publications, and membership
campaign;
• Refine and implement the national COOL Cities Initiatives;
• Promote awareness of student involvement in community service through
public speaking and other opportunities;
• Collaborate with other organizations and invidividuals involved in the
service field;
• Serve as liaison to the board of directors; and,
• Other duties as they arise or are assigned.
Qualifications:
• bachelor’s degree required;
• minimum five years of experience in campus-based communtiy service and
service-learning programs, preferably at both the campus and
national/state levels;
• additional experience preferable with national/community service
field, especially with AmeriCorps and Learn & Serve America programs;
• commitment to developing student leadership;
• strong fundraising and managerial track record;
• demonstrated experience in leadership development;
• experience in non-profit management;
• willingness to travel and to live in Washington, DC; and,
• creativity and flexibility.
