Conference Announcement -- June 5 & 6, 2000

Assessments in Educational Reform: Both Means and Ends
******************************************************

A two-day conference of interest to educators who need to use information
effectively for school reform.

The Department of Measurement, Statistics, and Evaluation (EDMS), of the
University of Maryland, College Park in
conjunction with the Maryland Assessment Research Center offers this
opportunity to enhance the utility of assessments
in school reform.

Co-sponsor:      Maryland State Department of Education

Location:        Campus of the University of Maryland, College Park
                 Room 1240, Biology-Psychology Building

Dates & Times:   June 5, 2000, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm (lunch
provided)       June 6, 2000, 8:30 am - noon

Presentations: Prominent speakers will visualize effective
ways assessments can be instrumental in effecting positive
change in educational institutions.

Purpose: To provide an opportunity for the educational
community to explore ways to use assessment for school
improvement. The conference is also intended to honor Dr.
William D. Schafer, who is retiring after a distinguished
career as an academic and as a state assessment
administrator.

Albert E. Beaton, Boston College
How will we get valid among-state and international
comparisons and what will they tell us?

Susan M. Brookhart, Duquesne University
What will teachers know about assessment and how will that
improve instruction?

Ronald K. Hambleton, University of Massachusetts How will we
understand and use assessment information?

Edward D. Roeber, Advanced Systems in Measurement and
Evaluation How will we gather the data we need to inform
policy makers?

William D. Schafer, University of Maryland, College Park What
do we do well and what will we need to work on to do better?

Richard J. Stiggins, Assessment Training Institute What will
educationally sound classroom assessments look like and how
will we get them?

Lauress L. Wise, HumRRO
How will assessment data be used to document the impact of
educational reform?

Fees: Regular: $100; Full-time student: $50 (letter from
Chairperson required) - Monday Lunch included
