Happy Monday! Well, I didn't come across any new articles on
service-learning over the weekend, but I did find a two articles that were
new to me. Both of them are available (full text) on the Internet so I
thought I'd pass them on to you.

Learning from Others: Service-Learning in Costa Rica and Indonesia. By
David Williams and William Eiserman. Education Policy Analysis Archives v5
n4, Jan 23, 1997.
http://epaa.asu.edu/epaa/v5n4.html
Abstract:
Calls are increasingly sounded for universities to better address their
communities' and students' needs through service, as well as research and
teaching. This article invites policy makers to re-examine university
service, research, and teaching responsibilities by reflecting on roles
service-learning plays in universities in Indonesia and Costa Rica. We
conclude that service-learning plays a critical role and a key to expanding
service-learning for students and understanding the utility of such a
policy change is increased faculty involvement. Until more faculty explore
the "why" and "how" of service-learning, research and teaching will
dominate the university agenda. (Abstract taken from web site.)
Problems, Politics, And Possibilities of a Progressive Approach to Service
Learning in a Community College: A Case Study. By Kevin Burr. Journal of
Industrial Teacher Education v36 n3, Spr 1999.
http://scholar.lib.vt.edu/ejournals/JITE/v36n3/burr.html
This study revealed that progressive service learning concepts can be
ideally utilized in a community college environment. These learning methods
lend themselves most specifically to technical career options in community
colleges and are in line with the emphasis in the community college mission
statement which focuses on career preparation and community involvement.
These learning methods are ideal because the traditional method does not
consider the global aspects of learning; the traditional method is mostly
theoretical in nature, is not realistic in application, and does not
connect the various aspects of the field of study.
