I am sorry that William D Morgan appeared to
perceive some ulterior motive in my last post. I only intended it to be helpful.
Yes - UK Centres is a "profit" organisation (we have never claimed
otherwise - it would be foolish to try if anyone thought we were doing so!),
although anyone who knows our work will know we make little if any profit
(unfortunately! - and we DO try!) and that student access is our major concern.
We are a "free lance" agency, not connected to any one institution and
offering programmes both within institutions and not; I would think there is
room for such an organisation. It would be easy, under English law to be a
"Charity", likewise we could link ourselves to one institution (but
that would be limiting). In any case, any understanding of the "not for
profit" law in the US or the "Charity" law in the UK will tell
you that all that glitters is not gold.... being "not for profit" in
the US or a Charity in the UK (the equivalent) tells you nothing, and, in the
context of my original post, you should not take this as a guarantee of
authenticity. It is entirely legitimate to be registered as a charity - for tax
reasons if nothing else, but that of itself, is NOT a guarantee. There are other
tests. I am happy that the programmes we offer stand comparison with any - in
terms of programme content, construction, and finances. Any glance at our web
site will confirm. (Incidentally, so far as the web is concerned there are many
highly reputable US organisations in our line of work which have
".com" addresses. Again, it tells you nothing. I wish we could afford
our own domain - when we have more profit we will do better).
I repeat - my original post was intended to be helpful and I
equally repeat that if you have any doubt about a programme on offer over here -
even if you are not using UK Centres for your programmes, we will do all we can
to help and advise. If you have any reason to doubt us - don't ask us - but,
just the same, if you are not sure about the programme ASK SOMEONE!
Cheers
- a somewhat dejected Tony
