Bev,

There is quite a bit of material on that subject in the National
Service-Learning Clearinghouse (http://umn.edu/~serve) literature database.
You can find most of it by visiting our site, select "databases" from the
menu on the left; then select literature; then perform a keyword search on
"teacher ed". You should find 70 items. Below is a sample of what you'll
find. Hope it helps! Ann

Title: Building Democratic Character through Community Experiences in
Teacher Education. Education and Urban Society, v28 n2, p189-207, Feb 1996
Author(s): Jennifer A. Vadeboncoeur; Irene Rahm
Abstract:
Tests the effectiveness of a teacher education course designed to reduce
teacher biases, increase their commitment to social justice, and entice
them towards collaboration with community members. Results show a positive
increase in all areas of focus except social activism. (ERIC:GR)

Title: Community Service Learning for Multicultural Education: An
Exploratory Study with Preservice Teachers. Equity & Excellence in
Education, v31 n2 pp52-60
Author(s): Marilynne Boyle-Baise
Abstract:
Through an interpretative case study, Boyle-Baise investigates the impact
service-learning experience has on one group of preservice teachers in a
multicultural teacher education class. Students were placed in programs
with diverse populations. Impact on students can be grouped into three
categories: some felt the experience was nothing new; for some this was the
first substantial exposure to diversity; and for others it was a chance to
become more aware of diversity. Service-learning promoted awareness,
acceptance, and affirmation of cultural diversity. However, the experience
did not necessary dispel stereotypes, and the experiences did not prompt
students to question societal inequality.

Title: Community Service Learning in Teacher Education: a Report on
Innovative Programs in New England.
Author(s): Beth Wohlleb; Dr. Robert Maloy
Date Published: 1998
 Abstract:
The authors surveyed all colleges and universities in New England that have
a teacher certification program to determine existence of community service
learning as a component of the program. Certification programs were in
secondary, elementary, or special education; early childhood; and
curriculum development. The survey tool is included and the survey results
are reported, as well as materials from community service learning programs
deemed remarkable.

Title: Community Service Learning: a Strategy for Preparing Human Service
Oriented Teachers. Teacher Education Quarterly, v23 n4 p59-74 Fall 1996
Author(s): Rahima C Wade; Jeffery B. Anderson
Date Published: 1996
Abstract:
Community service learning encourages human service-oriented teachers. The
paper defines service learning and its status in education, provides
examples from four teacher education programs, discusses why it is
effective in developing human service-oriented teachers, and raises issues
about challenges of implementing service learning within teacher education.

Title: Teacher Education and Service Learning.
Author(s): Robert Shumer
Date Published: 1992
Abstract:
Shumer discusses a study at the University of Minnesota to change teacher
preparation programs to include community-based and service-learning
opportunities. Suggestions for such a program come from surveys and
interviews with faculty from the University of Minnesota College of
Education and with community members who either teach in a community
service program or who include students in their community programs.
Results suggested two major options for change. 1) Tie a professional
practice program to the College of Education. 2) Integrate experiential and
service-learning topics and activities into existing courses and programs
offered through the College of Education.

Title: Best Practices: Service Learning in Teacher Education in New
Hampshire. 1998.
Author(s): Debra Nitschke-Shaw
Date Published: 1998
Notes:
See also the "Executive Summary: Research on the Best Practices of Service
Learning in Teacher Education in New Hampshire" available through NSLC.
Abstract:
Though each experience of service learning in New Hampshire schools is
different, the document lists 17 principles that all service learning
experiences include. In order to teachers to feel comfortable with service
learning, they must be provided with support and their efforts must be
recognized. Trainers in service learning must have subject expertise. The
report concludes with the following considerations: actual community needs
must be met in a respectful way; service learning must be integrated in
academic curriculum; service learning initiatives are defined, planned,
implemented, and coordinated in collaboration with the student, schools,
and the community; service learning provides opportunities for preservice
teachers to use newly acquired skills and knowledge in real life
situations; service learning initiatives should provide structured time for
frequent, substantive, and creative reflection; service learning
initiatives include ongoing assessment using appropriate assessment
strategies; effective service learning initiatives recognize the individual
and collective efforts of all participants; service learning should enhance
and extend the learning for all participants; and effective service
learning initiatives help to foster the development of caring, civic
responsibility, and global stewardship. (SH)
