Service Learning Vista Position Available

AmeriCorps* Vista positions are currently available with COMMON CENTS NEW
YORK (www.commoncents.org), a youth development organization dedicated to
helping all children become engaged, effective, and valued community
builders during their youth. Working primarily within the educational
system, the organization innovates large-scale service learning projects
for
young people that contribute to the well-being of others, pursue justice,
promote learning and generosity, and enhance the status of youth.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Vista fellows at Common Cents work as a team to:
* Recruit schools for an annual cycle of service learning programs;
* Provide on-site training and technical assistance to teachers in
schools that are working to integrate our programs into their curricula;
* Assist with teacher orientations and make school-wide presentations;
* Run a citywide day long volunteer event involving over 1500 students,
teachers, and parents.
* Prepare and distribute materials;
* Collect data on the educational impact of our programs;
QUALIFICATIONS:
Common Cents is looking for fellows from a broad range of backgrounds who
have an interest in the challenges that face young people in an urban
environment and who have a desire to work with teachers to help develop
projects that help to express the students' desire to make a difference.
Applicants should be able to communicate effectively, be outgoing and
willing to take initiative. All fellows should be willing to work as a part
of a group committed to the development of the program and of each other.
Applicants need not have participated in service or service learning
programs before, but should have a commitment to both student and community
development. Training for necessary computer and database work as well as
for programming responsibilities will be provided.
COMPENSATION:
All AmeriCorps* Vista fellows receive the standard AmeriCorps Vista living
allowance ($802/mo in 1999-2000)and up to $500 in moving expenses as well
as
deferment or forebearance of student loan payments, health insurance and
possible childcare assistance. Upon completion of service, fellows have the
choice of a $4,725 educational voucher or a $1,200 cash stipend. In
addition, Common Cents Vista fellows will also receive assistance with
housing and transportation costs.
