CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION
Employment Opening - Neighbors Project Coordinator
Office of Community Service
The Office of Community Service (OCS) exists to facilitate, coordinate,
enhance and recognize the service efforts of our students, staff, faculty
and alumni with community agencies and organizations in the DC
Metropolitan area. The OCS provides the GW community with a clearinghouse
where individuals in search of service opportunities can seek out a broad
range of initiatives. Both long term placements and short term events are
listed. OCS staff coordinate an assortment of larger service projects
which bring participants together to work on site with both service
providers and their clients. The OCS works to recognize and celebrate all
of the outstanding efforts that GW students and organizations make in the
area of community outreach. The OCS also works with academic schools,
departments, and individual faculty to identify the type of
service-learning programs and projects which best assist students in
meeting course requirements.
Neighbors Project
The Neighbors Project mobilizes the efforts of GW students to serve the
Shaw and Columbia Heights communities of northwest Washington, DC. Each
year, the Neighbors Project selects fourteen student coordinators to work
with community partner organizations for approximately twenty hours per
week. Neighbors Project community partners include community service
centers, heath clinics, public schools, senior service providers, and
community development centers. The Neighbors Project philosophy focuses
on guidance through the voice of the community, and as such, works closely
with community partners to ensure that students meet community needs.
Neighbors Project student coordinators, in addition to serving at a
partner organization, also facilitate volunteerism for their peers.
Student coordinators are responsible for recruiting, training, and
providing ongoing reflection opportunities for student volunteers.
Neighbors Project Coordinator Job Description
The Neighbors Project Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day
administration and coordination of the Neighbors Project, including
supervision of student coordinators and volunteers, as well as training
and supporting student coordinators to enable them to serve with community
partners and lead volunteers. Additionally, the Coordinator is
responsible for maintaining and developing relationships with community
partners. The Coordinator is also responsible for ensuring that service
hours are performed and proper documentation is maintained. BA required,
