Title: Invitation to Teacher
Educators
AN
INVITATION TO TEACHER EDUCATORS!
We invite you
to Clemson University for an institute that will enable you to
maximize the learning in service-learning. You will be able to give
your students the tools they need to analyze important issues through
a process of ethical decision making and reflective
practice.
2004 Service-Learning in Teacher Education
Institute at Clemson University
Clemson, South Carolina
June 27-29, 2004
Teachable Moments:
An Institute on Service-Learning, Ethics, and
Reflection
Sponsored by the
International Center for Service-Learning in
Teacher Education at Clemson University
This Institute on Service-Learning, Ethics, and Reflection is
specifically designed for teacher educators. It will include:
* introduction to and discussion of principles of ethical decision
making
* introduction to and practice in reflective writing
* focus on civic engagement and citizenship
* focus on both preparing future teachers and on helping pre-service
teachers use service-learning in their classes
The ethical
dimensions of the many issues related to education, or indeed any
subject area, are not explored if the teacher just "shoots from the
hip" when students pose ethical questions. Rather, teachers need to
develop a set of skills that will allow them to truly engage the
students in reflective discussion as opposed to avoiding difficult
questions or merely trading personal opinions. The institute provides
an opportunity for faculty development in applied ethics and
sophisticated techniques of critical analysis and reflective
writing.
Teacher educators involved in service-learning have an outstanding
opportunity to stimulate their pre-service students' thinking
regarding a variety of issues that affect the world of education.
Service-learning provides the real-life experience that can offer
those teachable moments. How can you ensure that your students are
thinking about the many important issues that relate to our society?
The process of ethical decision making can give you the tools you need
to make this happen!
At the same time, you
can teach your students to incorporate the process of ethical decision
making into their own teaching, both in service-learning experiences
and other teachable moments.
