California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB), is a comprehensive
public university committed to serving the diverse people of California,
especially the working class, historically under-served, and low income
populations.  The university values an educational environment of cultural

practice; effective and experimental use of technologies as resources to
people and catalysts for learning; and the integration of
cross-disciplinary models enabling students, faculty and staff to engage
in innovative instruction and coordinated service learning.  The
curriculum is organized around student learning outcomes.  It is global in
perspective, and of sufficient breadth and depth to meet local, regional,
and statewide needs, specifically those of both isolated rural communities
and inner-city populations.  The campus is located on Monterey Bay, 100
miles south of San Francisco.

Under the general supervision of the Director of Service Learning, the
Coordinator of Introduction to Service Learning Instruction is responsible
for teaching the lower-division service learning requirement.  The purpose
of these courses is to foster the development of self-reflective,
culturally aware and responsive community participants through reciprocal
service and learning.  The coordinator is also responsible for developing
curriculum materials and leading faculty development efforts for the
cohort of faculty teaching courses that meet CSUMB
service learning requirement.   These faculty development and curriculum
development efforts emphasize multicultural awareness and skills,
community/university partnership-building skills, and assessment of
student learning through service learning.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.      Develop and maintain community and school partnerships in conjunction
with teaching Service Learning courses each semester.
2.      Lead weekly faculty development sessions, coordinate curriculum support
and mentoring for all faculty teaching Community Participation courses,
emphasizing work on cultural identities. 
3.      Participate on university-wide learning outcome leadership committee
and appropriate Faculty Senate committee.
4.      Respond to students
Community Participation ULR, conducting assessments where appropriate.
5.      Monitor assessment of student learning outcomes, and evaluation of
course objectives.
6.      Conduct research on student learning and multicultural community
engagement.
7.      Participate in Service Learning Institute staff meetings.
8.      Provide mentorship for service learning students and student leaders
(University Service Advocates, USAs).
9.      Work collaboratively with other Service Learning Institute staff to
support other service learning initiatives and events.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Equivalent to an earned Doctorate in a related discipline AND three years
of progressively responsible and professional level teaching experience in
higher education that demonstrates knowledge of service learning theory
and practice.


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Significant experience in using experiential learning techniques to
facilitate self-reflective learning on identity and diversity (e.g.
abilities, age, class, gender, primary language, race, sexual identity,
religion).  Experience teaching service and multicultural civic
engagement, and fostering an ethic of civic responsibility.  Experience in
assessing student learning in an outcomes-based learning environment. 
Experience facilitating learning in diverse classrooms or groups. 
Demonstrated ability to be self-reflective about how identities impact
interaction with individuals and groups broadly defined by gender, race,
age, sexual orientation, physical abilities, income, educational
background and job classification.  Experience in faculty development,
especially with regard to issues of diversity and cultural identities. 
Ability to communicate in Spanish is desirable.


SALARY: Commensurate with background and experience; position also
