readings needed

I am creating a syllabus of five focused discussions to be had by national 
service members this year. I am looking for resources/readings related to civic 
engagement and volunteerism. I know there is a ton of material out there, but 
if anyone has any favorites-especially particularly thought provoking or debate-
inducing-please let me know.
