Hi
Lori --
I
am Program Assistant at the Center for Service Learning at
Regis University - College and, while we've got lots of different types of
'intra-campus stuff' going on, one of the main goals we're currently working on
is to encourage a greater sense of justice/equality on-campus amongst different
communities of people at Regis. Specifically, we're offering custodians
who work on the campus (through a sub-contractor of Regis) free English as a
Second Language Lessons, as nearly all of our custodians are non-English
speaking immigrants. In these classes, interested custodians are taught
English (at various levels), with the help of volunteers who are students at
Regis that are working to fulfill service learning requirements for various
courses (one of which is on immigrant and refugee issues). It's proving a
great way for students and custodians alike to share skills and to create
meaningful relationships together. This semester we're just piloting the
program out of our Center (with me as the primary teacher), but we're hoping to
work it into the University's infrastructure and link it into an ongoing teacher
ed program that we have. Let me know if you've any further
questions. Best of luck!
Sincerely,
Melissa Nix

Have practitioners and experts on service-learning discussed
something that I refer to as 'intra-campus service-learning'? Examples -
1) students in a research methods class collect data to determine how students
and faculty perceive the campus Learning Center, this information will be used
to help the Learning Center understand the obstacles it faces in its efforts
to get students to utilize the Center and improve their academic performance;
2) students in a small group communication class work in groups to develop
surveys and collect data from students, faculty, community members to
determine how the campus TV station is perceived/utilized by various
stakeholders. The undergirding assumption is that campus TV stations,
when broadcast to a large area outside of the campus boundaries, is a
potentially valuable resource for campus AND community members. These
are two examples of what I'm referring to as intra-campus service-learning.
Does service-learning always have to occur outside of the academic
institution? I'm looking forward to your responses.
