Civic engagement and the impending war

Service-Learning Colleagues:

At our institution, Portland Community College, we are currently dealing with an issue that, for many of us, embodies the spirit of civic engagement in higher education: the question of whether or not we, as a group of educators, should collectively voice our opposition to the impending war against Iraq.  Our faculty union has decided to take on this issue, and we'll be voting on such a resolution next week: we've been very encouraged by the level of interest and the dialogue instigated by this civic activism.

In the interest of encouraging more discourse and debate on campuses represented by members of this listserv, I'm including below weblinks for two resolutions that we are now studying as models.  Besides these, I believe that the University of Montana, University of Wisconsin (Plattville), and University of California at Santa Cruz have passed similar resolutions (there may well be others).

Resolution passed by the faculty at Oregon State University:

University of Oregon's proposed resolution:

I also have a copy of a draft resolution that will be voted on by the Oregon chapter of the American Federation of Teachers--if anyone is interested.

Good luck to those who pursue this.
