I would be interested in the origin of the term, Problem-Based
Service-Learning, Shirin. I design curriculum for charter schools and it
is constructivist in nature, inter-disciplinary and problem-based. I also
incorporate service learning. Seems to me that most s-l projects could be
designed to be problem-based. In working toward this, I would place the
responsibility of discovering the s-l project upon the students'
shoulders, have students research the
political/historical/medical/environmental/etc implications of the
problem, the proposed solution, and have students reflect on the research
process as well as the service process. The methods outlined in I-Search
would be a strong component. I will be interested in reading others'
thoughts on this question. susen
